We recently acquired insurance coverage through our broker for our upcoming construction project, and on it was listed “butler steel building”. This term is widely used in the Bahamas by architects and engineers to represent a prefabricated steel building, just as “Kleenex” is easily exchangeable for tissue.
Butler buildings was one of the first manufacturers represented in the Bahamas back in the late 1950’s. Since then others have been represented over the years including Span, Stran, and Varco Pruden. There is no local representation, per say, of other various suppliers such as Nucor or Dean Steel Buildings, however these buildings are sold by foreign representatives and imported. Another type of supplier is the internet dealer, who will under-bid the project in order to over-sell the “upgrades” – buyer beware with these, you don’t know who is manufacturing the building or have many rights after the sale. Read our featured blog post at Star Buildings when considering buying or exporting a steel building.
Star Buildings has been represented by TMC in the Bahamas since 2001, and have completed many projects large and small throughout the islands of the Bahamas. We have also worked with other Star Buildings authorized representatives on projects throughout the Caribbean, including Haiti and Jamaica.
